Why is my electric fence not working?

Why is my electric fence not working?

November 28,2024 tongher Industry 27

Electric fencing is a great solution for keeping your livestock secure, while also keeping unwanted pests and predators away from your field, garden or areas you want to protect. The benefits are endless for managing grazing and pasture space, with electric fences helping to control animals in a selected area of your land when strip grazing.

When installing your electric fence for the first time, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need for your fence to work properly. Here are a few basic components you will need for electric fencing success:

Electric Fence Energizer

When choosing an energizer, you need to consider the size of space you are looking to fence, and the type of livestock you are containing. Larger animals like cattle need a fairly strong current in order to ensure they respect the fence. Sheep need a stronger voltage due to their thick coat, as they will consistently test the electric in the hope the grass is greener on the other side

There are a number of energisers to choose from, including:

·         Mains electric fence energisers: a great solution as this requires less maintenance and you don’t have to worry about replacing the battery. It’s cheap to run and highly reliable and powerful.

·         Solar electric fence energisers: perfect for remote areas, and works on the battery charging off daylight and converting into electricity meaning it’s extremely cost-effective.

·         Battery electric fence energisers: is ideal for users who need a semi-permanent electric fence as this energiser is easily portable and recharges more than 750 times.

·         Here are our top tips to troubleshoot your electric fencing problems:

·         It’s always a good job to walk the length of the electric fence to check if there is any damage. should check there is no damage to the line conductors and that the connectors aren’t loose.

Check your Energizer is working by disconnecting the earth and fence cables. Then check the voltage by connecting the voltage tester to the terminals. If over 5000v, make sure you check your earthing. If the voltage is above 5000v there could be a fault with the fence energiser itself. If there is no voltage it’s time to check the power supply and plug fuse for mains energisers. For a battery energiser, check that the battery is fully charged and the leads are not broken or damaged.

Keeping your electric fencing running does require regular maintenance, but this easy to install fencing solution will help to keep your animals safe, secure and happy grazing in their fields.
